he programme of feeding in-patient attendants in various government hospitals in Hyderabad, being managed under Bhojanamrita scheme by the Hare Krishna Movement (HKM), is set to be extended further in Telangana districts and Hyderabad. On Monday, the free food scheme of HKM was launched at Gandhi Hospital, covering 180 in-patient attendants, by Health Minister Laxma Reddy. Efforts are on to launch similar free and nutritious food schemes at Sirsilla in Karimnagar district, Warangal, Jadcherla and Nizamabad, HKM officials said. Lauding the efforts of HKM in feeding the poor, Health Minister Laxma Reddy maintained that such organisations should take up similar exercises in other parts of Telangana.

In addition to the districts, HKM is also making efforts to introduce daily free food scheme for 250 to 300 in-patient attendants at Fever Hospital, Nallakunta and close to 100 attendants at L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI).

The scheme already covers nearly 3,000 attendants in Osmania General Hospital (OGH), Niloufer Hospital, Sultanbazar and Petlaburj Maternity Hospitals, King Koti and S.D. Eye Hospitals, Indo-America Cancer Hospital, Mahaveer Hospital, government hospitals in Mahabubnagar, Bodhan and Nizamabad and one special centre at RTC crossroads.

“Every day, attendants are provided a meal consisting of hot rice, sambar, sabji, pickle and buttermilk. We also provide fruits and sweets at least once a week. This is possible because of Gandhi Medical College Global Alliance, the alumni members of the medical college, who had decided to donate generously for the cause,” said vice-president, HKM, Bindu Madhava Dasa.

Musheerabad MLA K. Laxman, Director of Medical Education (DME), Ramani, and top officials from Gandhi Hospital were present at the launch. HKM is also actively looking for donors who want to contribute to the Bhojanamrita scheme. To participate, call 93969-569864.
