Six persons injured and vehicles attacked in group clash

Six persons were injured and two houses, three vans and an autoriskhaw attacked in a clash between two sections of people at Saveriyarpalayam and Hasanathpuram near Begumpur here on Sunday night.

Tension gripped these areas till Monday evening. More than 260 police personnel were deployed at the two places bring the situation under control.

The two colonies wore a deserted look. Anti-riot vehicle and water cannon vehicle ‘Varun’ were kept ready near the entry point of these areas on the Dindigul-Madurai highway to handle riotous situation.

The police said that three persons in Saveriyarpalayam were injured after a quarrel between two groups on Ramzan night.

The injured, Ebenezer, J. Sebestian (27) and M. Sakthivel (18) of Saveriyarpalayam, were admitted to Dindigul Government Hospital.

To take revenge, another group of persons from Saveriyarpalayam attacked S. Bashir of Hasanathpuram, R. Vigneshwaran and a woman of Hasanathpuram and three vans and an autorickshaw parked in the street.

Two houses were also damaged in the attack.

The situation turned worse when some persons at Saveriyarpalayam rang the church bell around 2 a.m. alerting local people.

Residents of Saveriyarpalayam assembled in front of the church. Meanwhile, people at Hasanathpuram also assembled in the streets to face their rivals.

On hearing the situation, a large number of police rushed to the spot and prevented the clash.

The police have registered cases against persons on both sides.
