A 3-day meet on ‘Leadership towards better health’ was held

Exploring the theme of student leadership in areas of research, clinical skill development and social accountability, the Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, Puducherry, hosted the 7th South Indian Medical Students Conference (SIMSCON - 2015) in the last week of June. The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Sunil Chandy, Director, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, who presented the keynote speech. The conference is considered unique as it is organised completely by medical students. Around 380 delegates from 35 difference medical colleges participated in the conference.

The three-day medical conference, with the theme, ‘Leadership towards better health’, comprised skill training workshops in Cardio-pulmonary cerebral resuscitation, Electro-cardio gram, radiology, arterial blood gas analysis, communication skills and literature search. The conference was led by Dr. Raveendran (JIPMER), Dr. Kadambari(JIPMER), Dr. Sathyababu (HelpAge India), Thomas Mathew (SMVMCH) and was moderated by

Dr. Amol Dongre (SMVMCH).

Around 80 scientific papers were presented through oral presentations and poster presentations. Some of the new features of this year’s conference included pre-conference workshops, inter-collegiate quiz, Spell Magic (scramble games with medical terms), Clinico-Pathological Conference and e-Poster presentations. The conference also included yoga sessions, and social events.

Student secretary Ubenthira Patgunarajah said it was the first time the conference was being held over three days with such elaborative arrangements, according to a press release from the college. He termed it a grand success.

Digital Locker

Stating that the country is ready for its biggest digital empowerment exercise through Digital India, Principal Vetrivel Sezhian inaugurated the Digital Locker system for students at the Sri Ganesh College of Engineering and Technology,Puducherry, on July 7. A press release from the college stated that Mr. Sezhian said that the Digital Locker system was a promising initiative, and if implemented successfully, would boost development. The Digital Locker system minimises the use of physical documents, and enables the sharing of e-documents across agencies, he said. All important documents can be stored in digital format and linked to Aadhar numbers for easy access. G. Rajamohan, College Administrative Officer and Murugan, Head, Department of Computer Science were among those who attended the programme.

‘Use practical knowledge’

NCR Corporation General Manager Phani Kumar Vutukuri advised students to develop their skills and practical knowledge to develop innovative projects, while speaking at the inauguration of the Association of Communication Engineers at the IFET College of Engineering, Villupuram. The Association of Communication Engineers is an initiative of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. College Chairman K. V. Raja, Vice Chairman A. Mohammed Ilyas, Secretary K. Shivram Alva and Principal Dr. G. Mahendran were among those present at the programme.
