Pragathi PU College loses recognition

July 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - BENGALURU:

Over three months after a 17-year-old student was shot dead by an attendant of her college, the Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE) has decided to de-recognise Pragathi Pre-University College in Kadugodi here.

DPUE Director Sushama Godbole told The Hindu that the college was found to be “misusing” the recognition given to it by offering additional coaching for entrance exams to the Indian Institutes of Technology, among others. “In addition, we found a lack of safety measures for female students,” she added.

The department’s move comes as a blow to the students who have taken fresh admissions to the college, as well as those who are in their second year. Ms. Godbole said the Deputy Director of PU, South will be asked to facilitate shifting the existing students to a neighbouring college.

Asked about the timing of the action, considering the fact that the academic year has already begun, she said due procedure and investigations needed to be followed.

Soma Singh, Chairman of Pragathi College, said he had not received the order. “We have over 250 students in I and II PU and 40 per cent of the portions have also been completed. We are running a PU college and it is not a crime to offer additional coaching to the students,” he said.
