A four-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy suffered burns after two policemen, who were trying to evict street vendors, threw a big pan with boiling oil on the ground, which splashed on the children. The incident occurred in Northeast Delhi’s Mustafabad area around 7.30 pm on Sunday.

Residents said makeshift shops were set up on the street for Eid. The two constables from Gokalpuri police station, one of whom was in plainclothes, had allegedly demanded Rs 500 from a vendor. When the vendor refused to pay, residents alleged, the policemen threw utensils.

“One of them threw the utensils and the oil splashed on the two children standing a few feet away. As they began to scream, a crowd gathered. The policemen then fled the spot, leaving their motorcycle behind,” Ismail Baig, a vendor who witnessed the incident, said.

However, when family members went to Gokalpuri station, they alleged the officers there did not pay any heed to them. “We went to the station at 10 pm along with the children. They spoke to us for five minutes but did not register any complaint. After a few hours, they registered our complaint but it did not match our version of the events. So, I refused to sign it,” Mohammed Rajib, the children’s uncle, said.
