WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) - The latest marketing campaign in the western North Dakota oil patch hub of Williston is putting a positive spin on what would appear to be negatives.

The city contracted with a Bismarck-based company called The Creative Treatment to produce a series of marketing videos. The first, launched in May, generated more than 25,000 YouTube views in less than a week, the Williston Herald reported.

Williston’s population has doubled since 2010, surpassing 30,000 as people from around the country flock to the region in search of jobs. It is the nation’s fastest-growing micropolitan area, an entity with between 10,000 and 50,000 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Rising crime and skyrocketing apartment rents, blamed on the rapid population growth, have led to some negative perceptions that the city has worked to fight off - including branding itself “Boomtown USA” about two years ago.

The new video marketing campaign, dubbed “Last Great Place for Opportunity,” focuses on the city’s strengths, touting major infrastructure projects and spotlighting diversification.

“The purpose is to capture a real image of a city that is exciting, growing and ripe for business development,” said Shawn Wenko, executive director of Williston Economic Development.
