Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have been around for a while now, so it's truly mind-boggling that celebs still haven't figured out a foolproof way to use these social media platforms!

From accidental nudies to eyebrow-raising status updates, it seems like someone is always slipping on the virtual red carpet.

Stars who have failed and lived to tell the tale include:

1) Hrithik Roshan, who tweeted about the dress... 3 months after the picture surfaced on the internet!

If you weren't one of the people trying to figure out the white-gold/blue-black conundrum three months ago, you were either living under a rock or you were Hrithik Roshan!

Twitteratti can be cruel and the actor was majorly trolled for pondering about the dress in May when the buzz surrounding it started and ended in February.

Also worth noting is that his Twitter wallpaper is still a picture of him and ex-wife, Sussanne Khan. Poor thing seems to live in the past!

2) Komal Rizvi and her infamous selfie with philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi

The singer got slammed on social media after she posted a selfie looking mighty happy with Edhi, who looked pretty much the opposite. It is no secret that the man has been ill for a while and so the picture was received in bad taste.

People were enraged and the gloves started coming off.

We wouldn't want to be in her shoes!

3) Hamza Ali Abbasi and his Facebook rant(s) about item numbers

Our favourite Pyare Afzal star is no stranger to throwing up words, often treating Facebook like his diary. The actor refuses to be silenced and always has an interesting opinion to share; however, his item number tirade, in which he praised Zhalay Sarhadi for "not taking off her clothes" in her Jalaibee number was not well-received with folks in the media.

Was he attacking Ayesha Omar, his friend whose upcoming item number's teaser had been released around the same time? Was he calling his friends in the industry hypocrites? He sure came under the line of fire!

4) E.L. James (author of 50 Shades of Grey) deciding to do a Twitter Q&A

When the erotic novel writer decided to have a Q&A session with "fans' on Twitter, things went horribly awry. Turns out, not everyone's fond of the fastest selling novel of all time!

Needless to say, we would fire the publicist if we were in her place!

5) James Franco flirting with an underage girl on Instagram

Twitter and Facebook have a tainted history, but this just goes to show that Instagram isn't spot-free either! Lucy Clode, barely 18, snapped a picture of Franco in the background at a public appearance and when she tagged the star in the picture on Instagram, the inappropriate messages started.

Unluckily for Franco, the teenager leaked screenshots of their conversations online.

The actor began asking the young girl strange questions.

That being said, not all stars are technologically challenged, all the time. Here are 5 times they owned social media:

1) Deepika Padukone shutting down the tabloids for discussing her cleavage

In September last year, Deepika lashed out at Times of India (TOI) for posting a picture of her from a top angle, focusing on her cleavage.

She posted on Facebook: "A character may demand that I be clothed from head to toe or be completely naked, and it will be my choice as an actor whether or not I take either. Understand that this is a ROLE and not REAL, and it is my job to portray whatever character I choose to play convincingly."

She also bashed the daily on Twitter.

Although TOI remained unapologetic, the Happy New Year actress got a lot of support pouring in from everywhere, including her colleagues.

She also recently appeared in Vogue’s campaign ‘My Choice’ which aimed to empower women to take ownership of the choices they make.

2) Komal Rizvi responding to her haters after being bashed for her selfie

You win some, you lose some. The former VJ addressed all the negativity surrounding the picture with a follow-up Facebook post in a calm and collected manner:

She wrote, "Both Edhi sahab and I were happy taking it [the selfie]. We were laughing and joking and singing and talking about other celebrity visits and how I can possibly participate in the future with their foundation. I am EXTREMELY disappointed with how nasty, negative, lazy and hypocritical some people in Pakistan are; to take such an innocent and beautiful thing and turn it into something ugly."

You tell them girl!

3) Mawra Hocane getting a shout-out from Ranbir Kapoor

Anyone who's been on Mawra's Instagram knows the girl is a huge Ranbir Kapoor fan. Imagine her excitement when Javed Sheikh, who will be appearing with Deepika and Kapoor in upcoming movie Tamasha, made her dream come true and filmed a video of the actor greeting Hocane.

The talented young starlet had Bolly celebs giving her shout-outs before she even entered the industry; now if that's not a win, we don't know what is!

4) Hamza Ali Abbasi getting Mark Zuckerburg to apologize (sort of)

Hey, he gets it right occasionally! When Facebook removed a status posted by Abbasi regarding the Charlie Hebdo attack and blocked his profile temporarily, the fearless actor posted yet another status about how it was unfair. Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg took notice.

When asked by one profile Angelic Munni what Zuckerberg has to say about his network's deletion of Hamza's post, Mark Zuckerberg responded: "I don't think this should have been blocked. Our team might have made a mistake. Justin, can you look into this?"

In the response, Zuckerberg tagged Justin Osofsky, whose Facebook profile identifies him as Vice President of Global Operations.

With time, it seems like these celebs are learning to navigate the unforgiving and tricky world of social media.
