It is the age of genre-defying and genre-defining cinema. Actor Ayub Khan, however, prefers to stay loyal to the small screen. His new character is Kuber Malhotra on Star Plus’s Phir Bhi Na Maane…Badtameez Dil.

“It is television in which I have got the opportunity to grow as an actor. Agreed, a good scene in a film remains for posterity but television is a daily product of consumption, where today’s scene is tomorrow’s history. This keeps one on their toes,” says the actor. While his roles in films such as Dil Chahta Hai, Apaharan, Mrityudand, Gangaajal, and LOC Kargil brought out his range as a performer, it is the tube that “feeds one financially and creatively”.

Kuber Malhotra is a business magnate, egoistic, shrewd and with shades of grey. With a father-son conflict and separated lovers at the core of the storyline, Phir Bhi Na Maane…Badtameez Dil also has an album of 16 original tracks sung by Darshan Raval, runner-up of reality show India’s Raw Star, to its credit.

“Most of the times, one is offered a character that may be alive for, say, 20 episodes. It is in this limited time that one has to make enough impact for the audience to get glued to him and force the writers and directors to keep the character on,” says Khan. In Ek Hasina Thi, for instance, he had to match the charismatic, dominating personality of Simone Singh, who plays his wife Sakshi Goenka. “As her husband, Rajnath Goenka, I was written as a cowering man, but I took the risk of playing him with a little agression. It interested the writers and my role continued,” says the actor.
