Basawaraj consumed pesticide at his residence on Saturday morning and was shifted to the government hospital at Bailhongal and to Belagavi for treatment on Sunday evening.

His relatives told presspersons that Basavaraj had cultivated sugarcane on five acres and had supplied it to Malaprabha Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane, M.K. Hubballi through a shareholder during the 2014-15 crushing season.

He was awaiting dues from the factory, which had allegedly made only a part payment.
