GURGAON: The family of Pinky Chauhan, the 21-year-old student of Government Girls College, Sector 14, who had tried to immolate herself on the premises in September last year, is planning to approach the high court to plead for a quick probe in the case.
The family has expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of police investigation. Pinki's brother, Arun, told TOI, "Even after 10 months, the police are still investigating the case."
Pinky was a second-year student who set herself ablaze on September 29 in the college premises to protest "bizarre" evaluation of exam papers by Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, to which the college is affiliated.
Her family alleged she had been provoked to take the extreme step by the words and actions of a lecturer and the then-principal. An FIR was registered by Civil Lines police station under various sections of IPC, including Section 306 (abetment of suicide).
"Before she died, my sister had identified the lecturer who had given her the matchstick and forced her to immolate herself" said Arun. Pinky was admitted in Safdarjung Hospital, where she died on October from burn injuries.
The city police formed a special investigation team (SIT) in January this year to probe the death of Pinky. The SIT was headed by ACP Somer Singh initially. However, the case was transferred after Singh's transfer. It is currently being looked at by ACP Dalbir Singh.
"We are investigating the case from all possible angles. As it is a case of abetment to suicide, it is a little difficult to figure out who forced her to commit suicide," said Rajesh Kumar, ACP Crime.
"It shouldn't have taken so long to file an investigation report in this case. As no investigation report has been submitted, we can't approach the district court. The family is, therefore, planning to go to high court," said Advocate SS Chauhan.
