JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - The Mississippi flag has been removed from a display of state flags lining one of downtown Juneau’s main streets and replaced with a version that doesn’t include Confederate imagery.

The Juneau Empire reports (https://bit.ly/1StZZwE ) that it has been replaced with the Mississippi Magnolia flag, a former state flag that features a magnolia tree and a star.

Local businessman and former City and Borough of Juneau assemblyman Marc Wheeler was given permission to remove the flag, which he considers a symbol of racism and hate because of its confederate symbols.

The flag’s removal adds Juneau to a growing list of cities that have decided not to fly the flag in the wake of the Charleston church shooting that killed nine people.
