Govt. has failed to prevent farmer suicides in Karnataka: Yeddyurappa

Former Chief Minister, B.S. Yeddyurappa alleged that the State Government has failed to prevent the farmers suicide due to pending loans.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the house of deceased farmer, Vedamurthy in Konemadenahalli in Gubbi taluk of Tumakuru district on Sunday, Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the Union Government is ready to provide necessary help to the State to address the issue but the State government does not know how to use the facilities.

He handed over Rs. 50,000 to the family of the deceased farmer.

President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, Dr. G. Parameshwara also visited the deceased farmer’s house and gave Rs. 50,000 to his family members.

Speaking to reporters, Dr. Parameshwara said that the Government is committed to protect the interests of farmers. He said that the opposition parties should not politicise the issue of farmers suicides.

He said he will speak to the Chief Minister to convert the short-term loans to long-term loans and to direct banks and moneylenders to not pressurise the farmers for repayment of loans.

The State Government will contemplate regarding the waiver of loans taken by farmers. Mr. Parameshwara also visited the house of deceased farmer, Halappa in Nandihalli and gave his family Rs. 50,000.
