Mistrust at SAA top level - report

Johannesburg - South African Airways (SAA) chairperson Dudu Myeni has told chief financial officer Wolf Meyer and acting CEO Nico Bezuidenhout that she no longer trusts them, the Sunday Times reported.

According to the newspaper, mistrust at SAA has deepened with Myeni insisting that board meetings are held with her private bodyguard stationed outside the door.

The guard reportedly had instructions to search everyone before they entered the room, and their cellphones and notes made during meetings were confiscated.

Meyer confirmed to the newspaper that he had tried to record conversations at a meeting, but insisted he only did this to "protect himself".

According to insiders his attempt to record the meeting was met with displeasure from Myeni.

'Rumour mongering'

Last week Fin24 reported that SAA had denied reports that Bezuidenhout would be replaced by a new acting CEO soon.

"Baseless rumour mongering" about SAA has been "a pandemic in the media" for several years, SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said in a statement on Friday.

He was responding to a Business Day report that Bezuidenhout would be replaced by SAA's general manager of operations Zukiswa Ramasia.

"SAA remains focused on turning around the business and Mr Bezuidenhout’s interim leadership has been critical in returning SAA to relative stability. He remains committed to the SAA group and this is fully recognised by the shareholders, the board, his management colleagues, staff and key stakeholders," said Tlali.
