NCP leader Awhad not allowed to meet family
NCP legislator Jitendra Awhad was detained by the police on Saturday evening when he attempted to enter the Dahisar housing society, which is in the news because of a fracas between a meat-eating Maharashtrian family and its vegetarian Gujarati neighbours.

Awhad wanted to meet the Chavan family – which has accused its Gujarati neighbours in Bona Venture apartments of intimidation, harassment and abuse – but was not allowed to enter the building. Already, the neighbours’ fight has turned into a political battleground, with the Shiv Sena, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and the Swabhimaan Sanghatna scrambling to lend support to the family, portraying them as native Maharashtrians harassed by outsiders (Society squabble turns into veg vs non-veg fight, MM, July 18).

While the MHB Colony police said that Awhad was detained “only as a preventive measure”, the NCP leader slammed the cops. “When Ireached the spot, DCP Vikram Deshmane stopped me and said that I cannot enter the building. He said that there were preventive orders and detained me, Had this DCP been more vigilant, more than 100 people would not have died in Malwani (in the hooch tragedy).”

The Chavans have alleged that a mob of over 30 Gujarati residents from the building attacked them on Thursday night and threw eggs at them. Chavan’s nighbours, however, have claimed that it was the Chavans who had harassed and taunted them.
