District in-charge Minister Umashree met the families of some farmers who committed suicide in Bidar district, on Saturday.
She promised Saraswati, wife of Ishwar Biradar who committed suicide in Madargaon village, that the government would bear the cost of educating her children. To a question, she replied that the government was likely to declare drought in districts if it did not rain till the next week. She later met families of farmers in Mangalagi and Aliambar villages.
A delegation of farmers leaders met the Minister and submitted a list of demands.
Their demands include waiving of all loans taken by farmers, hiking of compensation amount to Rs. 10 lakh given to dependents of farmers who committed suicide, release of arrears of Rs. 110 crore to sugarcane farmers, etc.
The Minister said she would convey their concerns to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Leaders Parameshwar Patil, Satish Naganure, Gurulingappa Waldoddi, Siddanna Bushuetty, and Channabsva Huchche were part of the delegation.
Deputy Commissioner Anurag Tewari, Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar Reddy, and zilla panchayat chief executive officer Sharat B. were present.
