As Panvel is all set to make rapid strides on the global map, there is a need to address certain concerns on different fronts such as power and water supply. "The development of Panvel has taken place at a very fast pace in the past decade. Different projects of international standards have been planned for this belt. This has led to people showing great interest in this belt. It is not a case of gradual development," said Satish Shirguppi, an NRI who owns a property in the region.

He added, "It seems like planning authorities like Cidco and the Panvel Municipal Council too had not anticipated the phenomenal growth of this belt in a short span. This could be the reason for power and water supply issues in certain pockets. However, I have been hearing that steps are being taken to augment water supply as well as upgrade electricity infrastructure by adding new sub-stations."

It was the news of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and the NAINA plan that triggered the rapid growth of Panvel and its surrounding areas. "The airport, NAINA plan have been the catalyst. However, there are several hurdles that need to be acrossed. The development of the airport is an ongoing process and is moving on at a slow pace, while the NAINA plan is yet to take concrete shape. Still, sensing the opportunity, business houses and corporates are venturing into this area," said Kamlakar Varde, a resident of old Panvel for over five decades.

He added, "The Nhava Sheva-Sewri sea link project is stuck up because of land acquisitions but once on it will diminish the distance between Panvel and Mumbai. The state government seems to be very serious on this front as both Cidco and MMRDA have been concentrating on getting
this projects going at the earliest."

Challenges
Inadequate power and water supply in certain pockets
Slow pace of execution of NMIA and NAINA
Authorities need to expedite land acquisition for the sea link project
