Finally, work to begin at Hoodi railway station

A high-level platform of 450 metres for either side, a booking office and a bus shelter will be built

It is good news for techies travelling to Whitefield, as travelling to their offices by trains is nearing reality. The South Western Railways (SWR) has called for tenders to construct the Hoodi railway station. According to SWR officials, a high level platform of 450 metres for either side, a booking office, a bus shelter (small type) will be constructed at a cost of Rs 1.37 crore. The work is to be completed by six months.

This is a big victory for techies demanding a railway station at Hoodi. The proposed Hoodi halt is to be come up near the Hoodi flyover that connects Krishnarajapuram and Whitefield. SWR officials said that currently, trains stop near Prestige Shantiniketan and hundreds use the train everyday. However, as the location was not feasible for platforms, they decided to further the location by 500 metres for the purpose of a new railway station.

The first hint of the station was dropped at Suresh Prabhu’s maiden railway budget where he acknowledged the contribution of Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan.

In his speech, Prabhu had said, “I request all MPs to use part of their MPLAD funds in improving facilities at railway stations.

It is with gratitude that I mention the name of P C Mohan for donating Rs 1 crore from MPLAD funds for passenger amenities.”

It is this money that is likely to be used to upgrade the Hoodi station.

According to railway commuters, this ‘unofficial stop’ is being used by 13,000 commuters on a daily basis and as per railways, this is likely to go up to 45,000 commuters a day, once the suburban trains come up. Some citizens had shot a documentary on the plight of railway commuters here. There has been a steady increase in workforce travelling to Whitefield.

An estimated six lakh people travel daily to ITPB and nearby places. This has resulted in the main roads (Mahadevapura road, Marathalli road, Kundalahalli road and outer ring road) leading to Whitefield being choked with traffic. It may be noted that the problem became so bad that even the city traffic police revised their plan in the Whitefield area.

Meanwhile, as the Whitefield area is nearer to the Bengaluru city Jolarpettai railway line, the commuters opted for the trains. A few trains like Bengaluru City-Marikuppam passenger and others would halt at the Satellite Goods Terminal Whitefield (SGTWF cabin), which is popularly known as Hoodi station. Sanjeev Dyamannavar, founder of Praja and a railway activist said, “With the metro construction to begin at Whitefield, traffic congestion will worsen, which may force more people to shift to trains. So, a new railway station would always be of great help. This will be the second halt in the city limits after Sri Krishnadevaraya halt near Vijayanagar was launched recently.”
