MADURAI: A government school in Sivaganga district, which continues to give its private counterparts a run for their money with its innovative schemes, may be the first state-run school in Tamil Nadu to have it own website.
The website www.rmhschool.com was launched on Thursday by Karaikudi municipality chairperson Karpagam Ilango.
The Ramanathan Chettiar High School opened in 1939 as a primary school.
It was then upgraded to a middle school in 2002 and became a high school in 2013.
The teachers themselves pooled Rs 6,000 for the development of the website, and the designer came forward to do it at a concessional rate for the government school.
Most of the children come from economically poor backgrounds, whose fathers are usually daily-wage labourers or auto drivers. Though a government school, it boasts of having modern facilities, including smart classrooms, and a good teacher strength. These are a major attraction for which the school sees a huge rush among parents to enroll their children here.
All the details of the school are now available on the website. Karpagam Ilango who launched the website has also promised more classrooms for the school. The website is linked to the Facebook page, helping the parents to stay updated on the day-to-day activities of the institution.

Next year, they plan to upload the application forms for various classes online to enable parents to download the forms without having to stand in long queues outside the school to buy it. S Thangam, a parent, said she had accessed the website and was happy that even weekly exams and special classes had been upgraded on the site.
Devakottai district educational officer K R Murugesan said this was a good initiative to attract more students to the school, which was already doing very well. He said that to the best of his knowledge, this was the first government school in the state to have its own website.
