Cops rescue woman from Nagpada brothel after she called control room, 7 held

It was around 7 pm on Thursday when joint commissioner of police, crime, Atulchandra Kulkarni received a call at the main control room of city police. The woman's voice from the other end was trembling. She disclosed to him that she was speaking from a brothel where she is being forced into flesh trade to by unknown persons.

When Kulkarni tried to find out the whereabouts of the brothel all she could inform was bare details like "a dusty black car parked outside" and "surrounded by mango trees". "She also stated that she had heard brothel people mentioning to Foras Road," said additional commissioner of police, crime, KMM Prasanna. Police, however, swung into action and managed to locate the brothel. The victim was rescued along with another woman, while seven others were arrested.

"A special squad with officers from Social Service Branch (SSB) was constituted and entire Nagpada area and Foras Road were searched. Once the brothel was located on the first floor of Banaras Chawl at RS Nimkar Marg Nagpada, we wasted no time in rescuing the victim. Four persons tried to stop the police party from discharging their duty, but they were nabbed," said deputy commissioner of police, enforcement, Pravin Patil.

The victim told the police that she hails from Kolkata, has three children including a daughter and is separated from her husband. "She was working in Delhi, where she came across a person a month ago who promised her a job in Mumbai. After victim came to city, she was given a rented room in Marol to stay. She was then sent to hotels and lodges where she was physically assaulted. She was later sold to a brothel at Nagpada," said a police officer from SSB.

"On Thursday, the victim managed to convince a customer to part with his phone for a few minutes, after which she hurriedly rang up control room," he added.

Further inquiries by police led to three more arrests. The arrested have been booked for rape under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act.

The police are on the lookout for three more persons involved in the case.
