NMC general body set to examine garbage scams
NAGPUR: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has continued to shield private operator Kanak Resources Management Ltd despite six serious scams coming to fore in its operations. Now there is some hope for action as corporator Abha Pande tabled a proposal before the general body seeking termination of agreement with the private operator. Pande’s proposal mentions four irregularities related to garbage collection and transportation.
Inquiries and audit reports had exposed six.
Meanwhile, the administration has tabled a proposal seeking ban on hookah parlours in the city. The general body meeting is scheduled for July 20. General body has already passed one resolution recommending ban on hookah parlours to state government.
At the beginning, the NMC general body will felicitate former mayors and a few corporators. Datke said first meeting of the general body after being upgraded to municipal corporation was held on July 20, 1951, with election of first mayor Sheshrao Wankhede. “General body meeting is also scheduled on July 20. Therefore we have decided to celebrate the 63rd anniversary. We could come across only one corporator who was member of the first general body Sadanand Fulzele and will felicitate him. Felicitation of former mayors and deputy mayors will also be done,” he said.
Datke added that a coffee table book to mark 150th anniversary of Nagpur civic body was likely to be unveiled in September. “NMC organized various programmes to mark the anniversary throughout last year. We could not get time of President last year. All MPs had requested President to grace the programme. We are hopeful of getting time in September this year,” he said.
The general body meeting is likely to see vigorous debate on the proposal to allot Untkhana Primary School building to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel guarding RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat for five years.
