CHENNAI: Suburban trains running on Beach-Tambaram line were delayed for more than half an hour on Friday evening after an EMU fatally knocked down a buffalo and injured another near
Nungambakkam railway station.
Train services resumed after the body of the dead and the injured buffalo were moved out of the line by the locals.
Blue Cross of India's general manager
Dawn Williams and a few volunteers, who were informed about the incident, reached the spot and started treating the injured animal near the track.
"We have requested the railway authorities for a trolley so that the animals can be moved. They will most likely be removed after midnight when train services stop," Williams said, adding that the injured has been given animal pain-killers and drips to keep it alive until it is taken to a hospital.
Meanwhile, government railway police said such accidents occur due to negligence of the cattle owners who allow the animals to graze near tracks. "When an animal dies, its owners never turn up," an official said, adding that steps are being taken to prevent such accidents by erecting fences along the tracks.
