Left parties hold dharna in Khammam

July 17, 2015 06:11 pm | Updated 06:11 pm IST - KHAMMAM:

Activists of the Left parties – CPI, CPI (M) and CPI (ML-New Democracy) staged a protest demonstration at the bus stand, stalling the vehicular movement for over half an hour here on Friday as part of the bandh called by the Left parties in support of the demands of the striking contract municipal workers including wage hike.

Vehicular traffic was thrown out of gear for more than half an hour when the cadres of the Left parties staged a dharna near the bus station resenting the alleged apathy of the State Government towards the striking contract civic workers's needs.

The CPI district secretary B. Hemantha Rao, CPI (M) district secretary P. Sudarshan Rao and CPI (ML-ND) district secretary P. Ranga Rao were among those participated in the demonstration.

The district leaders of the TDP and the Congress besides other opposition parties also expressed their solidarity with the agitators. Tension prevailed at the busy centre when the police detained several demonstrators amid stiff resistance from the latter.

Meanwhile, the CPI (M) cadres led by Bhadrachalam MLA Sunnam Rajaiah staged a dharna in front of the RDO’s office in the temple town on Friday in protest against the alleged indifference of the State government in redressing the grievances of the contract sanitation workers of the major gram panchayat of Bhadrachalam.

The Mandal Praja Parishad President Shantamma, division leaders Phaneeswaramma and K Srinivas Rao of the TDP also took part in the stir.

Addressing the demonstrators, Mr. Rajaiah said that Bhadrachalam town was exempted from the bandh in view of the ongoing Godavari Pushkaralu. He demanded that the State Government should immediately hike the wages of the striking sanitation workers on par with the GHMC workers and concede their other demands.

An intensive agitation will be launched if the government failed to respond to the demands of the striking sanitation workers, he warned.
