After the CBI questioned senior CPI (M) leader P Jayarajan in connection with the murder of an RSS leader, the party on Friday alleged that the BJP was using the CBI as a political tool to lock in its leaders in cases.

CPI (M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the BJP was misusing the CBI to jail senior party leaders in fabricated cases with an eye on the coming elections to the local bodies. “They (BJP) wanted to keep CPI (M) leaders away from election activities. The CBI is used as a political weapon against the CPI (M) at the behest of the RSS and the Central Government,” Balakrishnan said.

Recently, the CBI had questioned CPI (M) Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan in connection with the probe into the murder of RSS leader E Manoj. Subsequently, Jayarajan, who had been made an accused in the murder of an Muslim League activist two years back, moved an anticipatory bail in the district sessions court, which has postponed its decision for next week. Besides, an area secretary of the CPI (M) from Kannur district has already been made an accused in the murder case, making the party jittery over the CBI move.

The CPI (M) state secretary said 26 CPI (M) workers had been killed in last four years, with RSS activists being the main accused in 16 cases. However, not a single case, in which RSS men were the accused, has been handed over the CBI. On the other hand, the police have slapped false cases against CPI (M) activists. Several party workers have been arrested under the Goonda Act, which was not applicable to activists of Congress or BJP who are involved in similar cases.

He said the state government was also using the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against the CPI (M) workers. Even though Congress leaders were involved in murder cases, they did not face relevant sections of UAPA, said Balakrishnan.
