Valmiki Yaaru: confiscation notification withdrawn

The High Court of Karnataka, Dharwad Bench, on Thursday disposed of a criminal petition filed by the publisher and the author of the controversial Kannada book, Valmiki Yaaru?, as the State government submitted that it has withdrawn a notification issued as part of confiscation proceedings.

Advocate for the petitioner Madhukar Deshpande said that on August 28, 2014, the State government issued the notification ordering confiscation of the book.

Challenged

Author K.S. Narayanacharya and publisher M.A. Subrahmanya challenged the notification and filed the criminal petition before the Full Bench of the High Court and the High Court issued a notice to the State government. During hearing on Thursday, counsel for the State government filed a memo stating that the government had withdrawn the notification of August 28, 2014 through a fresh notification on July 15, 2015. Recording the submission by government counsel, the High Court disposed of the criminal petition, Mr. Deshpande said.
