‘N’Assembly tussle healthy for Nigeria’

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member representing Ogoja/Yala constituency of Cross Rivers State in the House of Representatives, Jarigbe Agom, has described the leadership crisis rocking the National Assembly as good for the nation’s democracy.

According to Agom who spoke with newsmen yesterday, the development is healthy and will re-position the lawmakers into making laws that would impact positively on the citizens adding that what is happening presently at both the National Assembly is not abnormal in a fledging democracy.

He said rather than seeing the challenge with a negative lens, the lawmakers in the 8th National Assembly had better formed a synergy to deliver the dividends to the electorate who made the political change possible in the country.

According to him, “the 8th National Assembly as presently constituted is made up of credible, capable and experienced Nigerians who can stand out to make the electorate very proud.

“Therefore, the happenings at the chambers are enough to prove critics wrong as it is capable of re-positioning the process and we should build on it to better the lives of our people by emphasizing on good governance.

“I expect my other lawmakers to see the internal wrangling as an opportunity to re-position the legislature and make laws that would impact positively on citizens of the country”.

Agom suggested that the legislature should form harmonious working relationship to work for national interest, expressing confidence in the Speaker of the House, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, who he described as a man with pedigree and capable of carving a niche in the House.

He said Dogara is the best candidate to have emerged to steer the affairs of the house at the moment and called on other 308 members to support the Speaker rather than dissipating energy on issues that would divide the House.

Agom expressed optimism that the ‘change’ mantra of Dogara’s party, (APC) was going to be a reality adding, “the Speaker is God’s chosen and we should shun sentiment and give him total support for the sake of moving the country forward.

“We have finished politics, now is the time to settle down for real governance. APC had better pick the pieces and allow the President to deliver on his promises to Nigerians.”
