Court grants bail to TMC MP Prasun Banerjee on personal bond

A local court on Thursday granted bail to Trinamool Congress MP Prasun Banerjee, against whom an arrest warrant had been issued for allegedly slapping a police constable, on a personal bond.

Barasat: A local court on Thursday granted bail to Trinamool Congress MP Prasun Banerjee, against whom an arrest warrant had been issued for allegedly slapping a police constable, on a personal bond.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bidhannagar, Apurba Kumar Ghosh granted bail to Banerjee on a Rs 2,000 personal bond after the TMC leader appeared before the court in person.

The constable had allegedly stopped his car for taking a wrong turn.

On July 9, the Barasat district court had granted a 10-day stay on an arrest warrant issued against the TMC MP by the Biddhanagar court and had fixed July 20 for the hearing of the matter.

On that date, Banerjee's counsel had challenged the legality of the arrest warrant issued on July 3 by Bidhannagar ACJM A K Ghosh, directing the police to take him into custody and produce him before the court by July 17.

Banerjee was booked under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of IPC.

The warrant was issued by the court as the Howrah MP allegedly failed to turn up before it on a number of occasions despite notice being served on him.

In January, the Bidhannagar Police had booked Banerjee for allegedly slapping an on-duty traffic constable in Lake Town area of the city.
