Mahindra Two Wheelers have silently discontinued the Pantero motorcycle. Mahindra have removed the Pantero from its product listing on its official two-wheeler website. The Mahindra Pantero was launched alongside the Centuro in 2013. While the Centuro was positioned as a premium offering, the Pantero was a bare basic commuter motorcycle for the price conscious buyers. Whereas the Centuro went on to make a space for itself in the highly competitive commuter market owing to its features, the Pantero never clicked in our market.
The Pantero was the replacement for the Mahindra Stallio which also coincidentally was also failed miserably in our two-wheeler market. Powering the Pantero was an indigenously developed and designed 106.7cc, single-cylinder motor as seen on the Centuro. The air-cooled unit churned out 8.5PS at 7,500rpm and 8.5Nm at 5,000rpm. Power was transmitted onto the rear-wheel via a 4-speed gearbox. The discontinuation of the Mahindra Pantero doesn’t really come as a surprise. Mahindra has introduced many sub variants of the Centuro to please the varying consumer demands. In many ways the base variant of the Centuro was cannibalising the Pantero as consumers preferred to buy the base Centuro given the nominal price difference. This move means that Mahindra now only has one motorcycle in its portfolio currently for the Indian two-wheeler market. This though, might soon change as production spec version of the highly delayed Mojo has been spotted testing and a probable launch soon is on card.
