Mumbai: Woman imprisoned, starved for 1 year by husband, in-laws

Mumbai, July 16: In a shocking incident in Nalasopara town of Palghar district, Mumbai, a 40-year-old woman was locked in the first floor of the flat where her husband lived on the second floor of the same building.

According to an exclusive report published in DNA, Durgavati Mishra, a native of Nalasopara, who was imprisoned in her flat, was rescued by the social workers and police.

She was kept locked up in the first floor of the Sai Deep Apartment in the Gala Nagar area of Nalasopara East for the last one year. Her husband Jayaprakash lived on the second floor of the same building with his sister-in-law, Induvati.

After being rescued by the police and social workers, Durgavati was taken to hospital.

Woman was suspected to be possessed by 'ghost'

Durgavati's husband and relatives kept her confined in the flat for the past one year because they doubted her to be possessed by a ghost. She lost her eyes due to malnutrition. Both her husband and sister-in-law were never bothered to check Durgavati's condition. They stopped giving her food and water as a result she became more weak and lost her eyes.

The incident came to light when few neighbours felt something fishy when unbearbale stink started emitting from the flat. They didn't inform the police and later when some social workers learnt about the incident, they rushed to the place and rescued Durgavati. The social workers informed the 108 emergency number and the Tulinj police station.

"She used to remain inside the flat and has tow minor sons. Her husband doubted that she was possessed and never bothered to visit her. He never fed her and her husband often assaulted her," said Neha Tiwari, a neighbor to DNA.

When the social workers entered the flat for the rescue operations, Durgavati was unable to respond or walk. Her sister-in-law was not responding to the questions asked by the workers. They called the police and broke in. She was taken immediately to the hospital.

According to Dr Sarveshar Dube, the woman's retina was totally damaged and lost her eyesight due to loss of water. There were assault marks on her body.

Speaking to DNA, Assistant Inspector Dilip Landge from Tulinj police station said, "The husband is working in Andheri. We have asked him to come to the police station. We will take legal action against him".
