It’s sad how we treat the people we love. We find excuses to not meet them. We vent our frustration on them. We blame it all on growing up or we blame our busy routines, forgetting that time is just passing by. Tomorrow, we might regret not being there for our special people.

So let’s get together and pledge to strive towards these 14 relationship goals and improve the valuable relations in our lives.

1. Don't ignore mom’s calls.

Let’s aim at not taking her for granted and not treating her like a punch bag. Don't you think a constant effort to genuinely 'be there' is what is needed?

2. Try to be dad’s son instead of being an equal.

Assist him with carrying those grocery bags instead of offering to pay the bill. Share responsibility of the simpler things. It will make you feel like a kid and that too is needed sometimes. For the sake of change, maybe?

3. Listen more to your girlfriend.

She needs to be reminded time and again that you are there for her. She needs someone to rant to, someone who will tell her that everything will be okay.

After all, what are boyfriends for?

4. Be there for your best friend when they need you.

Not when you want to be. Leave aside 'convenience' for some time. That will change a lot of things and for the better.

5. Switch off your phone when it’s time to meet the grandparents.

You can do without your phone for a few hours. Switch it off anyway. It's good for the brain and relationships in your life.

6. Share successes with your family.

There’s no denying that family is family. Your family members will be the only ones who’ll actually be happy for you. So whether it's an appraisal, promotion, new job, incentive or anything else, open that champagne bottle and share it with your folks.

7. Be a mentor to your younger sibling. And a supporter to your older one.

Let growing up not change anything. You need to be there for each other because if there is someone who will fight with the world for you, it is your brother or sister. Keep them closer and make an effort at that!

8. Give surprise visits to Dadi and Dadaji.

Imagine their wide smiles and teary eyes. Won't you leave that for the world? That feeling will be truly priceless.

9. Help your little brother with assignments.

Take out the time to be there for him. Guide him. Listen to him. Solve puzzles. Play video games. What can be a better way?

10. Just follow mom’s orders.

Saying ‘yes’ to whatever she says, instead of arguing and justifying why you can’t do a particular thing. Mom's are way too important and must be handled with care. They do a lot for us, and I am sure we can return some of that.

11. Clearly communicate your thoughts to your boyfriend.

Tell him everything that is there on your mind. Tell him if he's being a jerk or treating you badly. Don't be sacred to open up to him. Honesty is a rare trait. Why not embrace it?

12. Ask your loved ones if they need help.

People suggest volunteer and make a difference. A good way is to start from home. Actually offer to help your parents and friends. Nothing can match up to the feeling of being of helpful towards someone. Trust me, you will feel so much better about yourself. Let this goal be only for yourself.

13. Get together with your sibling and plan something for mom and dad.

It’s been a while since you both did something together. You're both busy in your respective lives, so why not try your hand at this? This will be a great way to live the old times and ensure that nothing has changed.

14. Plan a family vacation.

Take that trip, plan it and click lots of pictures on it. Spend time with each other and enjoy, eat good food and grab a drink, because these things will last in your memory forever.
