From Friday, the six zonal police stations that have been functioning under other stations will operate as independent police stations. With this move, the city will now have 23 police stations, according to Commissioner of Police Amit Garg.

The proposals have been pending since long and it was due to the sustained effort of the Commissioner that the DGP and the Home Secretary have approved the sanctioning of the new stations, said DCP C.M. Trivikram Varma here on Wednesday.

The new stations will be located at Maharanipeta, Duvvada, Dwarakanagar, Airport, MVP Colony, and Arilova.

Six SHOs, 12 sub-inspectors, 48 head constables and 228 constables will be distributed and deployed at the new police stations. The staff was drawn from the existing strength at the Police Commissionerate, said Mr. Amit Garg.

He also informed The Hindu that the new stations had to be carved out from the existing zonal set-up for better policing. “They will now function independently in the demarcated areas and will file their own FIRs,” said the Commissioner.

Own buildings soon

A present, the police stations will function from the existing place of work and subsequently move to a rented premises or a new building.

“We have asked the Revenue Department to identify some land in prominent areas under the jurisdiction of the new police stations and once allotted, we will have our own buildings constructed,” said Mr.Trivikram Varma.

Apart from the six stations, proposals have been sent to establish separate police stations for traffic, cyber crime, central crime station and city task force.

On manpower distribution, the Commissioner said that it would be done based on the profile and importance of the police stations.
