The American - who won gold at middleweight at the 1976 Olympic Games - tore through the light-heavyweight division in the 1980s to snatch the WBC, WBA and IBF world titles and then graduated to the heavies to hand Larry Holmes his first professional defeats, winning and defending the IBF heavyweight crown in the process.
In June 1988, he challenged the all-conquering Mike Tyson for his WBC, WBA and IBF world titles but after suffering a first-round knockout, hung up his gloves having racked up a phenomenal record of 31-1-KO21.
