It is not uncommon for a music label head to meet artistes on his label but for Devraj Sanyal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Universal Music Group South Asia and EMI Music South Asia, Lionel Richie is a childhood icon first. So when Sanyal met Richie at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Netherlands, it was a moment to savour.
"From The Commodores days to now, I've listened to every song Lionel Richie ever wrote, produced or sang. He left an impression on me. Seeing him live and meeting him completed the circle," Sanyal says. Calling the 'Endless Love' singer, "humble and grounded", Sanyal says Richie spoke of his love for India and how much he wanted to play here. "'Bring me there bro and I'll show you what Lionel Richie is made of,' he said to me. His performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival proved he is every bit the legend that we think him to be," says Sanyal.
