State housing public meeting

The Merivale community have the chance to speak out against government's plan to sell thousands of state houses at a public meeting tomorrow night.

Organised by the New Zealand State Housing Action Network, the meeting will be held at Merivale Community Centre on Kesteven Ave at 6pm on July 16.

The aim of the meeting is to inform tenants about government's plans and what they will mean. Tauranga and Invercargill are the first two cities to have state houses sold.

Invitations to the meeting have been sent to local state housing tenants, the local National party MP and local Labour, Green and Mana party representatives.

Merivale community leaders Harry Ormsby and Graham Cameron will be speaking at the event, alongside SHAN convenor John Minto.

Harry says there are 30 houses in Merivale, and he is one of the state housing tenants on the waiting list.

'I can guarantee you there'll be a lot of angry Merivale residents who have questions for the government there tomorrow,” says Harry.

What about a meeting to speak in favour of it as it is a great thing to do.

Would rather the state stop subsiding so many that don't need it if they got there S*** together and became self supporting. Don't see why my tax should be wasted on this. The Government is a horrible landlord anyway, all that happens in the houses get trashed and the taxpayers fixes it all again and again

Probably labour voters already

When you get accustomed to living off benefits, housing, food, accommodation allowances etc paid for by taxes from ordinary working people and business, any possible change to cosy or lifelong arrangements is naturally unsettling.

Wake up. They have built many new ones recently in Tauranga. Why would they keep a dingy uninsulated one????
