Deputy Commissioner K.V. Thrilokchandra held encroachment of tank beds and rajakaluves and unbridled extraction of sand responsible for the acute drinking water problem in the district.

“The people in the region have to introspect about their role in making the problem very complex and start to work to save the water bodies in order to achieve a jala kranthi (water revolution)”, Mr. Thrilokchandra said while inaugurating a workshop on water and hygiene at T. Chennaiah Rangamandira here on Tuesday.

The workshop was organised for the newly elected presidents and vice-presidents of grama panchayats in the district.

Saying that there was no change in the traditional rainfall pattern in the district, the Deputy Commissioner asked why the tanks are not getting filled up as was in the past. “It is high time for introspection and proper action,” he remarked.

He called upon the people’s representatives at the grassroot level to concentrate on preserving and developing water sources by making better use of funds available under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer N.M. Panali who also addressed the workshop said there is no use in ruing about already depleted groundwater table. “Making better utilisation of the available water sources and preserving them for posterity was the real challenge before the people’s representatives,” he said.

ZP president Rathnamma presided over the inaugural session. Former president Chowdeshwari spoke.
