IPL to MPL

THE Indian Premiere League may have spawned another big-ticket cricket league. The insiders at the Mumbai Cricket Association have been plotting another mega league but with a local flavour— the Mumbai Premier League. Like its predecessor, the Mumbai Premier League (MPL) will have eight teams and a glamorous auction for the players. Of course, top industrialists have shown interest already, but some Bollywood stars are also keen to match the stature of Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta of celebrity team owners. Who are these? You will read it here first.

Au revoir

MAITHILI Ahluwalia’s beauteous boutique Bungalow 8 has been in the news lately for moving back to their fabulous original location— under the bleachers of the Wankhede Stadium. But the back office wears a sad look these days, it seems their head designer, the very popular Frenchman Mathieu Gugumus Leguillon has decided to return to his home as well. The gamechanging designer was adored for his bohemian style and inventive shapes in clothes that were the best-sellers at the store. After eight special years in India and at Bungalow 8, Gugumus Leguillon misses France. Ahluwalia says their association ends with warmth and fondness and her design team will continue their work until they find a replacement.

The son also rises

WHILE much has been written about ICICI managing director and chief executive Chanda Kochhar’s daughter Aarti—her celebrity recipe book and her splashy marriage last year to her college sweetheart—Chanda’s son Arjun remains away from the spotlight. The strapping young lad is now a freshman student at Yale University. He’s also a happy member of Yale University’s Athletics team and represents the Ivy League college in squash tournaments. Not many know that Arjun has been a national-level squash player in India and has been in the top three rankings consistently. He had also represented India at the World Junior Championships in Namibia. How has he avoided the limelight? The way only the truly discreet know.

Art of acquisition

HERE’S adding yet another feather to Mumbai-based artist Shilpa Gupta’s illustrious cap. Her recent collateral show at the Venice Biennale, My East Is Your West (along with Pakistani artist Rashid Rana) opened to the public at Palazzo Benzon, continues to be talked about. News comes in that the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, has just acquired an audio sculpture, a large 15-foot rock microphone work (in pic), which she had exhibited at Arts Unlimited in Basel in May, for its permanent collection. A few months ago, the Centre Pompidou in Paris acquired another important piece, a video projection on the floor, based on wives of those disappeared in Kashmir. These are certainly big steps for an Indian artist.

Tailpiece

THE flamboyant and former CEO of a German automobile giant found himself in a bit of a fix recently. The gentleman in question, handsome and social, had surreptitiously taken his girlfriend to an exotic holiday to a resort in Rajasthan a few months back. Since this was a secret rendezvous, he didn’t expect anyone to know. But thanks to his pictures in the society pages, he was recognised by the owner of the resort. The owner wanted to make his prized guest feel special and ordered the chef to welcome him with bhajiyas in the shape of the car’s logo. Of course the CEO was livid but had to stay calm if he wanted to maintain his privacy. He made a judicious escape the next morning.
