VADODARA: Four members of a family died on Sunday after a
tanker first rammed a stationary truck near the toll booth on the Vadodara-Halol road and then veered into the adjacent lane, hitting their motorcycle. All four died on the spot.
They were identified as
Lalji Maachi (32), his wife Bharati Maachi (26) and their children
Sahil Maachi (5) and Tulsi Maachi (3). Lalji had stopped his bike to receive a call on his cellphone, while his wife and children were riding pillion.
"The CCTV footage shows that the tanker driver fell unconscious after crashing into the truck," said Bajpai. "The tanker then ran over the four persons."
On Monday, two people were arrested for ransacking and stealing from the cash box of the toll plaza. They had been part of a mob that created a ruckus at the toll booth on Sunday after the tanker accident.
Those arrested are Falgun Thakore and Yogesh Chavda. Thakore works at a hotel near the toll plaza, while Chavda works at a factory near the highway. Police inspector, Halol, VP Bajpai said Chavda had tried to run away with cash from the toll plaza's cash box but was nabbed immediately.
Thakore was identified from the toll plaza's CCTV footage. "He's disabled and doesn't have one arm," said Thakore. "He was a part of the mob that pelted the toll booth with stones."
