The progress in shifting three temples and 100-plus shops from near the flyover construction site in Gandhipuram is at snail’s pace.

Or, so it appears from what the officials tell The Hindu . The Coimbatore Corporation, after rejecting the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department plea for alternative site near the prison grounds, has identified a land in Kattoor for shifting the Muniappan Temple, Siddhi Vinayagar Temple and Muthu Mariamman Temple.

On this land near the Chellappa Gounder Street, the Corporation will provide around 2,400 sq.ft. to each of the three temples.

The Corporation has readied this and submitted the proposal to the authorities concerned for further action, the sources say and add that it is now for the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department to act. The latest is that the proposal is under the consideration of the Commissioner of the Department.

Likewise, the civic body has suggested two sites for shifting the 150-odd shops.

The civic body was forced to find alternative sites after the lorry drivers at the parking area near the Power House and Coimbatore North Railway Station said that it would be difficult for them to give up the place.

With the stretch of land near the Tangedco sub-station on Ukkadam By-pass Road as the first option and the stretch of land near the sewage treatment plant site on Nanjundapuram Road as the second option, the civic body has submitted a proposal to the authorities concerned for further action and are yet to hear from them.

The sources say that the civic body has done its part by identifying alternative sites and it is for the authorities concerned to act.

Meanwhile, the vehicles make slow progress in the Gandhipuram area as files move from one department to another.
