K. Dinakaran, MLA, on Monday urged the district administration to probe the road work by the Karumathampatty Town Panchayat along the banks of Ramachipalayam Canal.

In a petition submitted during the grievances redress meeting held at the Coimbatore Collectorate, Mr. Dinakaran said that the local body was constructing the road by encroaching upon the canal, which discharged water into River Noyyal.

In 2008-09 the district administration had sanctioned Rs. 18 lakh to clean the canal. The board placed by the town panchayat mentioned a road work that was being executed 200m away from the canal.

The president of K.V. Mathapur Panchayat, P. Arunagiri, too submitted a petition saying that the residents of Ramachipalayam were concerned about the road work being undertaken by the Karumathampatty Town Panchayat.

The road work would result in inundation of their houses during rain. He asked the Collector to stop the road work.

Title deeds

The Tamizhaga Dalit Munnetra Kazhagam petitioned the district administration seeking title deeds for the 500 families that had settled on a government land in Pachapalayam Gandhi Colony, Madhampatty, Theethipalayam, and Vadivelpalayam for the last 70 years. The kazhagam urged the administration to remove encroachments on around 2,000 acres of government land in the district. The land should be distributed to the landless.

Encroachment

The Harini Arcade Residents’ Welfare Association urged the district administration to remove encroachments on reserved sites in the area. In a petition the association said that a 70-cent plot earmarked for public use has been encroached upon. The encroachers had threatened them with dire consequences if they entered the land.

The residents said that their earlier petitions to panchayat and taluk officials have gone in vain.

Action needed

The All India Hindu Mahasabha in a petition asked the State Government to take action against persons who unleashed terror at Ambur. Around 500 people took to the streets, vandalised shops, pelted policemen with stones, and destroyed public property, after the death of Shakeel Ahamad.

The State Government must ban the organisations that instigated the riot, and arrest the rioters, the petition said.
