Heat wave hits Muslims observing Ramzan fast In Telangana

Many people are complaining of dizziness, fatigue and low blood pressure

Hyderabad: The prolonged heat wave is taking a toll on those fasting in the month of Ramzan.

Many people are complaining of dizziness, fatigue and low blood pressure. These conditions are prevalent among diabetics, heart patients and also in those who are not maintaining proper nutritional balance.

Cardiologist Dr Sunil Kapoor said, “The climate has proved to be a spoilsport this Ramzan as many people are forced to give up because of the intense heat wave. There are patients who have come with severe dehydration, low blood sugar levels and dizziness. They came to check whether they should change their medicines but were later advised that it was because of the heat conditions.”

The lifestyle change of getting up at three in the morning for Sehri does often take a toll on some people but the number is very few.

Dr Zain-ul-abeddin, general physician said, “The body and mind are prepared for the change during the month of Ramzan. But this year, the humidity in the air is causing a lot of problems as people are finding themselves totally drained. Their intake of water is limited because of the long hours of fast and added to this are the severe conditions which are taking a toll on many.”

And not only those who go outside for work, but even those who are indoors are feeling the heat. Ms Rukaiya Naseem, a housewife in Red Hills, Abids had to give up on her fasts as she suffered from extreme dehydration. Mr Abdul Naseem, her husband said, “She hardly came out of the house but her intake of water was very limited because she complained she could not eat enough food if she took too much of water in the evenings.”

This led to electrolyte imbalance in the body causing severe dehydration. General physician Dr G. Kishan said, “If people find that water is filling up their stomach and they can’t eat then they can opt for butter milk, fresh lime juice or a combination of sweet and sour lassi. Salt is required to ensure that the sodium level in the body is maintained. As there are some sweets in the form of custards, faluda and also fruits, the sodium balance is affected, which must be adequately maintained.”

With six days left for Ramzan Eid, there are many who want to complete their fasts.
