LUDHIANA: With Sirhind releasing rainwater accumulated in the fields into Buddah Nullah, clouds of fear have gathered over the areas surrounding the water body as it could cause water level to touch the danger mark. The irrigation department has raised an alert and the municipal corporation begun preparations to deal with the situation.
According to information, around 400 cusecs water is being released from Sirhnd area to the Buddah Nullah and water is expected to be at its peak level in the nullah on Tuesday night.
Gurtej Singh Garcha said that following heavy rains, a lot of water has accumulated in farms in Sirhind area and it was now being released into Buddah Nullah through drains. He further said that water entered the city on Monday afternoon and its level is expected to touch the danger mark on Monday evening and remain at that till Tuesday night.
The department has already raised an alarm and the civic body has been asked to make proper arrangements to avoid overflow of water from the Buddah Nullah, which could affect the surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, superintending engineer H S Khosa said that soon after the department got information from the irrigation department, they commenced preparations to avoid overflow of water from the nullah. He said that they have also increased the height of the boundary walls by putting sand bags in some areas. Till Monday evening, the situation was under control and the MC was making all efforts it can to avoid overflow of water from the nullah, he added.
