Prosecutors do not plan to indict a former Thai police official who was arrested at Narita International Airport last month on suspicion of bringing a loaded handgun into the country, sources said Monday.

Comronwit Toopgrajank, 60, identified by the Thai Embassy in Tokyo as a former Bangkok police chief, is alleged to have had a revolver with five live rounds inside a suitcase at the airport on June 22 before boarding a flight back to Bangkok.

Comronwit told the police he owns the revolver and that it had been given to him by an American friend previously. He said he had forgotten he had put it in the suitcase.

The sources said the police failed to find evidence that he had knowingly brought the firearm with him.

Comronwit, who arrived from Thailand on June 19 as part of a Thai group, said he came to Japan to visit a waste incineration plant.
