While watching their favourite animated characters – be it Tom and Jerry, Shrek or even Chhota Bheem — the viewers remember the dialogue and action, but very few see the hard work behind the scenes to create them.
For animators, the creation of the character and understanding how it moves is critical in creating believable characters, according to D. Suresh Kumar, veterinarian, graphic designer and animator. “Understanding human anatomy, and even the anatomy of animals, is an important step to be able to create these characters,” he said.
Experts believe that a year of study in anatomy is a must for animators. According to Susan Athi, Assistant Professor, Viscom and Animation, Loyola College, after the basics of drawing like still life, and learning about light and shade, all artists must learn about human anatomy. “When you are creating a character, you need to understand how it moves its limbs,” she says.
Mr. Suresh Kumar has an exhibition at Vinyasa Art Gallery as a way to kick off his new venture – Achilles Academy for Art and Anatomy, where he will conduct workshops for artists and animators on anatomy. The exhibition will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on till July 18.
