The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) of the Government of India is keen on promoting research in electronics, system design and manufacturing (ESDM) and IT and for that purpose has launched Visvesvaraya Ph.D. scheme for Electronics and IT.
The scheme focuses on development of research institutions across India into centres of excellence to help the country maintain its pre-eminence in technology and innovation. It is operated through Media Labs Asia, a Section 25 company promoted by the DeitY, enables the institutions develop facilities in research in Electronics and IT and thereby produce Ph.Ds. “The scheme aims at producing PhDs to meet the growing need for research scholars in the field,” Pranav Jha of Media Labs Asia explained to a select gathering of research directors, academics and research scholars at an interactive session organised by the Super Computing Consortium of India here on Saturday.
The scheme aims at promoting greater industry-academia collaboration and through that research and development in Electronics and IT subjects. Unlike the research fellowships given by the CSIR and the UGC under this scheme there is no direct funding to the scholar. It is only through the institution. The institution gets substantial funding for development of research facilities to help it become a centre of excellence.
The institution has to register for a project with the DeitY - Media Lab Asia under the programme and the funding is given for five years for the project. The institution not only gets funds for development of facilities and annual maintenance funding. The PhD scholars have to be registered after the project is approved, Mr. Jha said.
This academic year out of the 100 institutions that applied by March 2015 approval has been given to 72 institutions. The scheme is not applicable to individual colleges. For details visit phd.medialabasia.in.
