120 quintals of polythene seized from truck

Srinagar, July 11: Officials of Commercial Taxes Department (CTD) today seized 120 quintals of banned polythene from a truck at Lower Munda checkpost along Srinagar-Jammu National Highway in South Kashmir. The polythene was being smuggled into Valley from Jammu.
An official said that a truck bearing registration number JK21A/0434 attached with Advance Transport Service Jammu and consigned by JS and Company, Sabzi Mandi Market Jammu to Kullo Fruit Company Sabzi Mandi Parimpora Srinagar was intercepted at the Checkpost after toll clearance.
“The driver, Shakeel Ahmad, had declared the goods as onion…after the physical check of vehicle a huge quantity of polythene and polythene carry bags about  500 bags approx120 quintals were found excess in quantity and were without any documents in the vehicle,” the official said.
Accordingly, the goods along with vehicle were seized vide seizure memo number 307/LM-CT Dated 10-07-2015 and proceedings under various Sections of J&K VAT Act 2005 were initiated against the Driver of vehicle, incharge of Vehicle and owner of Goods, the official said.
He further said that the driver was put under close surveillance. “Today, we managed to crack & bust this gang which is involved in importing the banned Polythene into the Valley illegally,” the official said, adding: “a strong polythene mafia and some prominent dealers in Srinagar are involved in this trade and their drivers in nexus with few transporters are making attempts to import the polythene into Valley with new tactics & strategy.” “However,” he said, “We will make every effort to dealt them with iron hands under law
The official informed that the CTD has seized over 465 quintals of banned polythene & polythene carry bags from time to time at Lower Munda check point from different vehicles and same has been handed over to the authorities of Jammu and Kashmir State Pollution Control Board Srinagar along with seized vehicles in compliance to the directions of Division Bench of High Court.
