A 40-year-old auto driver, Shanmugam, was murdered at Thiruvanaikoil here on Saturday.

Sources said Selvam (52), a tailor of Srinivasa Nagar, allegedly assaulted Shanmugam when he was standing at an autorickshaw stand on Chennai Trunk Road. Shanmugam hit against a road side advertisement board and fell down.

On information, his relatives rushed to the spot and took him to house in Melakondaiyam Pettai without knowing that he was seriously injured.

However, he reportedly died in his house. His body had been taken to a hospital for postmortem.

It was said that Selvam attacked Shanmugam as he came to know that he allegedly misbehaved with his 13-year-old daughter.

Srirangam police have registered a case.
