Taiwan and Japan yesterday shared the gold medal in baseball at the Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea, after rain caused their match to be canceled.
After defeating Mexico, the US and the Czech Republic in the preliminaries, Taiwan eliminated hosts South Korea with a 2-0 victory on Friday to secure a spot in the final against longtime rivals Japan.
The final, which was to be held at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field at 6pm Taiwan time, was delayed and later canceled because of the rain.

The cancelation was a letdown for fans hoping to see a tough contest between two strong teams, but was met with impromptu dancing by Taiwan players.
The result sets a new best for the nation at the tournament, after taking sixth place in Buffalo, New York, in 1993, and fifth in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1995.
Separately, Taiwan’s Chang Kai-chen (張凱貞) defeated Thailand’s Varatchaya Wongteanchai 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 at the Jinwol International Tennis Court to advance to the women’s singles tennis final.
