ROCKAWAY BEACH, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say a 35-year-old man has drowned in the Pacific Ocean at Rockaway Beach.

The Coast Guard says a helicopter found the man in the surf on Friday at about 5:30 p.m. He was unresponsive when a diver made contact with him.

Shawn Vincent, assistant chief with the Rockaway Beach Fire Department, confirmed the man’s death.

Vincent said the man had been swimming with his brother in the rip tide area when he got caught up in the current. The brother made it back to shore, while the man went under.

The man’s family called 911 at about 3 p.m. to report the accident.

The man’s name or where he was from has not been released.
