DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress today accused the Narendra Modi government of playing into the hands of those who helped it come to power at the Centre and ignoring the interest of farmers.

"At the behest of those who played an important role in his becoming Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is ignoring the interest of farmers. Farmers in border areas, the hills and the plains have all been ignored by the Centre," Pradesh Congress Committee President Kishore Upadhyay said in a statement here.

Charging the Centre with not releasing the amount sanctioned by the UPA government for payment of dues to sugarcane growers in Uttarakhand, he said their problem needs immediate redressal.

The Congress leader said though resources at the state government's disposal are limited, Chief Minister Harish Rawat himself will have to do something for sugarcane growers in the same way as it did for farmers who lost their crops to unseasonal rains earlier this year.
