South Africa humble hosts Bangaldesh in first ODI

Riding on Faf du Plessis’s unbeaten knock of 63 visitors defeat host by eight wickets

Dhaka: South Africa beat hosts Bangladesh by eight wickets in the first One-Day International played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Friday. Riding on Faf du Plessis’s unbeaten knock of 63 the visitors won the match with 9.5 overs in hand.

Earlier, Rabada finished with figures of 6-16 in eight overs, the best ever by a debutante, on a wicket conducive to fast bowling after torrential rain forced the match to be delayed by more than two hours and made it 40 overs a side. Rabada exploited the conditions to leave Bangladesh at 40-4, after Mashrafe Mortaza decided to bat first.

The 20-year-old fast bowler, who was chosen ahead of experienced Morne Morkel, removed Tamim Iqbal, Litton Das and Mahmudullah in three consecutive deliveries in the second over. Rabada followed up with the wicket of Soumya Sarkar, who counter-attacked with a run-a-ball 27. Shakib Al Hasan resisted with 46 but the South African bowlers put in a disciplined attack to make regular inroads.

He and Mushfiqur Rahim (24) added 53 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter was trapped in front off J.P. Duminy (1-28).

Rabada claims hat-trick on debut

Kagiso Rabada became only the second man in history to claim a hat-trick in one-day international during the first ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Friday. Rabada bowled Tamim Iqbal in the third ball of his second over and then had Litton Das and Mahmudullah in the next two deliveries to complete the set, joining Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam, who achieved the feat against Zimbabwe at the same ground last December. The 20-year-old pacer later added three wickets to his tally to finish with 6-16, the best ever haul by a debutant, bettering the record of West Indies’ Fidel Edwards, who claimed 6-22 against Zimbabwe in 2003
