Dhanani had started his fast-unot-death on Thursday as state government did not announce relief package by the deadline he had set for July 8. Before starting his indefinite hunger strike, Dhanani had observed three-day token fast to press for his demand of declaring relief for around 300 villages of Amreli affected by flash floods. However, there was no word from government on relief package of the district which was hit by flash floods on June 24.

Minister of State for Rural Development, Jayanti Kavadiya, who is also minister in-charge of Amreli district said the Congress MLA had chosen the wrong way, “I don’t want to be drawn into any debate but I assure people that whatever package we shall declare will be in the interest of affected people. So far Dhanani’s agitation is concerned, I will say fasting is not solution of any problem. But talk is. He a representative of the government. He should come forward and talk to the government,” Kavadiya told The Indian Express.

Festive offer

Dhanani is accusing the state government of being in slumber while people of the district are struggling to put their lives back on track after their houses were damaged, agricultural land having been eroded and livestock killed in the deluge. But Kavadiya had said on Thursday that survey of damage was on and that government would declare relief package at “appropriate time.”
